How we calculate a deal’s P&L
The P&L of a physical commodity deal is built in five steps, with the same GP Granel works out for every deal. The definitions of GP, EBIT and P&L are in the glossary.
- 1
Work out gross revenue
Multiply the quantity sold by the unit sale price.
Revenue = quantity × sale price - 2
Work out the purchase cost
Multiply the quantity by the unit purchase price.
Purchase cost = quantity × purchase price - 3
Add up the deal’s cost lines
Add the direct costs of the trade: freight, commissions, certifications, port charges, customs clearance, B/L fees, bank fees, insurance and any claim reserves. The difference between revenue and purchase, before taking them off, is the trading spread.
Trading spread = Revenue − Purchase cost - 4
Get the GP (gross margin)
Take the purchase cost and the deal’s cost lines off revenue. This is the trade’s gross margin and the same figure Granel shows on every deal.
GP = Revenue − Purchase cost − Deal cost lines - 5
Work out the deal EBIT
Take off the GP the overhead costs (office, team, software) that fall to the trade, spread per tonne. It is what the deal contributes before interest and tax.
EBIT = GP − Overhead cost per tonne × quantity
Frequently asked questions
Is the calculator really free and sign-up free?+
Yes. It is a public tool built by Thinktier OÜ, the developers of Granel. It stores nothing and requires no account. The whole calculation runs in your browser.
Which metrics does it calculate?+
Gross revenue, purchase cost, trading spread, total deal cost lines, GP (gross margin) with GP per tonne and as a percentage of sales, overhead costs, and deal EBIT with EBIT per tonne and as a percentage of sales.
Which cost lines should I enter?+
The usual ones in a physical commodity deal: ocean freight, inland haulage, purchase and sales commissions, certifications, port charges, customs clearance, B/L fees, bank fees, insurance and claim reserve. You can add or remove lines to match your operation.
Why are EBIT and GP not the same thing?+
GP (gross margin) is what is left of revenue after paying the purchase and the deal’s direct costs: freight, commissions, charges, insurance. EBIT also takes off the overhead that falls to the trade, spread per tonne. Some desks call the plain difference between sale and purchase “GP”; here that figure is the “trading spread”.
Is it the same calculation Granel does?+
Yes: the calculator uses the same function that works out every deal’s GP and EBIT in Granel. Inside Granel, the overhead per tonne is set by each organisation in Settings, and can be refined per product.
Does it handle multi-currency with exchange rates?+
No. This calculator works in a single currency for simplicity. To work across currencies with daily exchange rates (the ECB being the main source), you need a full CTRM such as Granel.
Is my data stored anywhere?+
No. Everything is calculated locally in your browser. Reload the page and the values return to their defaults. If you want to save your deals and see them consolidated with cashflow and multi-currency, create a Granel account.
Granel is the full version of this calculator.
Six currencies with daily exchange rates, all your deals consolidated with 30/60/90-day cashflow, documents attached to the deal, team roles and, from Growth up, anomaly alerts. From €149/month on the monthly cycle, no lock-in.
